Plants That Keep Mice And Rats Away From Your Garden

Trying to fight these rodents, gardeners use any means – they put different types of mousetraps and generously scatter the poison in the corners. The best way to repel rats and mice is by using various home-made edible baits with toxic chlorine or zink phosphide based substances or ready-made remedies against rodents.
To some, these methods of getting rid of the mouse “army” seem inhumane. In addition, pets or children can suffer from mousetraps and toxic substances. And this should not be allowed in any case. Therefore, you can try a relatively peaceful way to drive the mice from your site – using plants.

And what kind of plants are these?


More precisely, not the flowers themselves, but their dug bulbs. To protect the plantings of root crops (potatoes, carrots) from mice, in the summer it is worth digging the bulbs of daffodils and distributing them over the entire area of the beds, mixed with coriander stems, and then covered with mulch.
Daffodils can protect tulips from mice. Mice are always ready to taste their onions.

To protect these flowers, bulbs of daffodils of low-growing species are planted around a flower bed with tulips in autumn.

Autumn Colchicum

It is used to make bait. All parts of this plant are very toxic, so the mice will not be too good. For bait, in most cases, seeds are used in a proportion of 20 g of seeds per 1 kg of any cereal. Instead of cereals, you can use flour, the result will be the same.

The explosive mixture is scattered in all places where the mice are supposed to inhabit and move.

Colchicum perfectly protects crops in the beds if it grows nearby.

Ledum or Rhododendron tomentosum

This plant is called a natural repellent – its aroma repels not only mice, but also other pests and insects.  Twigs with leaves spread out at the entrance to the mouse hole (even better – plug the entrance with leaves) are able to drive mice out of sight once and for all.



This plant has the same repellent effect – mice disappear without a trace.

They generally prefer to avoid places where the elderberry grows.


In order to protect bulbous and perennial plants, it is possible to add elderberry branches to the covering material, to tie tree branches with them.

Tops of the tomatoes

Tops of tomatoes can protect against mice.
Use this method is recommended in the fall.

To protect the crop, the seeds of this plant are scattered around tall boxes of vegetables.

Many pests do not like the scent of chamomile. In order to scare away the mice, chamomile heads are scattered on the floor of the house, in the corners.


Bunches of chamomile are scattered in the outbuildings, where vegetables and other products are stored.


The smell of tansy also scares off mice. To protect potatoes, carrots and beets from mouse invasion, bunches of this plant are left in buildings where the crop is stored.

Essential Oil Pest Control

A reliable and humane remedy, if you exclude direct contact with the rodent’s fur, which will force uninvited guests to leave your home. Mint essential oil can be used in several ways, for example, add a few drops to the water for washing floors – the main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise, the strong smell will give you a headache. Oil can be moistened napkins and put them in jars, which must be placed in the basement, cellar or shed. A solution with essential oil of mint, water, and alcohol copes well with rodents. To prepare it, you will need 300 ml of water, 10-15 drops of mint essential oil, 10 ml of alcohol. With the help of a spray gun, it is necessary to treat all cracks, floors and other hard-to-reach places where rodents can be found.

Ledum essential oil uses. The pungent smell repels bugs and fleas, so essential oil of ledum disinfect rooms in residential buildings.
